The Hall of
Supreme Harmony, which is the most important and largest structure in the
Forbidden City, is located in the outer court. In the Ming Dynasty, it was
called as “The Hall of the veneration of Heaven”. The name it uses now, “the
Hall of Supreme Harmony” is the name that Qing Dynasty gave. It is directly
connected to the Gate of Supreme Harmony by the “imperial road”. The building
is on a 8m high marble terrace. The Hall of Supreme Harmony was first built in
1420, and it was rebuilt 7 times after that. It was used for ceremonial
purposes, such as emperor’s birthday, nomination of military leaders and
coronations, and when empresses were enthroned. Inside the building, there is a
Dragon Throne called LongYi on platform up 7 steps. And when emperor sat on a
throne, he was surrounded by images of Dragons. He himself was also considered
to be the real heavenly dragon. The Hall of Supreme Harmony has highly
decorated 72 columns to support the building, and itself is decorated a lot,
too.
